Performance Standard


circulating like an ebony windfall
the hush of silence smothers us all
as we stifle our laughter and shut our eyes,
i hold my breath and squeeze in tight-
softened by the glow of a long black light.
after that, there is nothing;

everything collapses,
galloping off into a realm of butterflies
my arms lift of their own volition,
gloved hands bursting to life
forming little blue-white birds that heave with my soul.
they fly to where my heart is, dancing what cannot be said.

a final flourish, a thump, a thud;
a wait for the audience to applaud.
i breathe my last for he is gone,
he is gone, he is gone, he is gone.

audience, hold your breath and squeeze in tight,
obfuscated by the terror of a bright white light.
sirens will sing him to sleep every night.
