Catch Some Wide Eye

Fox

slender legged, gleaming coated
dogged expression, feline stance
she watches me from amidst the snow
tongue testing the air then retreating
to the warmth of cavernous mouth
the safety of carnivorous white soldiers
her tail flicks, fluffy and free
never retreating to the ground

she is bravery on legs at the point of my gun
she is red on her feet
she is red on the ground

I saw a fox climb a tree once.
    Like a cat with stilts.

    thank you for this poem

    That’s wonderful imagery.
I have to also thank the friend who took the photograph that inspired the poem. Thankfully, no gun was involved that I know of.

The second stanza is wonderfully suspenseful, and it is largerly due to the first stanza.

It is a bit jarring, isn’t it? I think that’s what I really love about it.
