Catch Some Wide Eye

Where He Belongs

tan man, leather hands
brows knit together and beaded with sweat
the man walks the border
not because he is a mexican
[the general term for the dark-skinned latinos]
but because he has self-sacrificial tendencies
goading him from within
and selfish needs prodding at him from without.

without water, without sleep
he walks the streets and tends the poor
hears their needs and blesses them
aiding them to his own physical detriment
until he is a sack of aging bones
stiff and baked out in the sun.
