Catch Some Wide Eye

Pearly Gates

muscles all over my body constrict
as if to wring out my heart and my fear
the door is looming ahead
i am being watched
i should feel justified
i paid for my goods: some toothpaste, a cd
but despite the receipt clenched in my hand
i know the buzzer will ring
in that awful tone of voice
when i cross those barriers
as if to say “thief! thief! lock her away!”

i pass through the gate
and nothing happens
